At the annual ceremony, awards were presented in recognition of the contribution made by thought leaders, innovators and pioneering adopters who distinguished themselves by their achievements during the past year.
25 finalists were nominees for the ID People Awards 2008. Based on votes from the industry and global enthusiasts, 5 awards are given each year to outstanding professionals for their roles in 5 different categories.
Major General Shafiqul Islam of the Bangladesh Army won the award in the most prestigious category – the Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition for his leadership in the Bangladesh Army's successful completion of the Voter Registration Project!
Here is what the UN had to say about this project and its successful completion:
"... a truly historic achievement: the successful, on-time registration of over 80 million voters, with digital photographs and fingerprints. Never before, in any other country, have so many people been electronically registered in such a short time. This in itself is an outstanding achievement. But it is not only the immense scale of the undertaking that is so impressive. So is the accuracy of the list. Modern technology enabled the elimination of duplicate and fraudulent entries, and will significantly reduce the occurrence of vote theft."
Ms Renata Dessallien, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative
In this project, TigerIT solution was used in the enrollment process to collect four fingerprints for each registrant and detect duplicate registrations.
All of us at TigerIT extend our congratulations to the General for this well deserved recognition and his successful delivery of the largest biometric voter roll ever deployed- over 80 Million people and 320 million fingerprints were enrolled!
